Jannes ter Braake (1793-1855)

Jannes ter Braake was born 31 Jan 1793 in Almelo, 5th child and 2nd son of Benjamin ter Braake (dutch link) and Margaretha Waalderink. He is my first cousin 5x removed.

Jannes married twice (1) to Anna Boom, and (2) to Janna Troost, who is related to me as well, she is my 2nd cousin 4x removed. Almelo was a small town, most people were related to each other somehow, although they would not count relationships past a certain degree.

Jannes was a merchant, and also a linnen bleacher, something the family had done for quite a while. Jannes’ grand-uncle Harmen ten Bruggencate (dutch link) was listed as a bleacher in 1770. His first father-in-law was also a merchant and bleacher; and various other family members were as well.

His first wife Anna died in Jan 1822, possibly of complications of childbirth (her last child was born in Oct 1821, and died in Aug 1822), leaving Jannes with two small boys, aged 3.5 and 2. Obviously he needed to remarry! In Sep 1822 he marries Janna Troost, a distant relation (she was his 3rd cousin 1x removed), and they have six more children; of whom only two grow to adulthood.

Jannes died in Feb 1855, he is survived by his second wife (however, she died in Nov of the same year) and four sons. It is again a story of much loss, but hopefully he also got to enjoy the twin grandchildren, who were born in 1842 on his birthday!
