Hannah Pollack (1900-2001)
Today’s birthday girl is Hannah Pollack, who was born 22 Jan 1900 in Rüthen, Germany, daughter of Alfred Pollack and Hedwig Neuwald. She died in Seattle, WA in 2001 at 101; a very long life. She was the wife of my husband’s first cousin once removed.
She married Hugo Voss in 1929 in Koblenz; they only had one child. Her sister, who married a brother of Hannah’s husband, died at the age of 95, and also only had one child. The brothers were sons of Herman Voss and Anna Mayer, and had two more brothers: Kurt and Hans
The 1930’s in Germany were full of uncertainty. The family was Jewish; and they saw the writing on the wall. After their father died, all four sons and the mother left Germany. At least two brothers went to Palestine first; Joseph came in 1938 from Germany to New York, and is in the 1940 census in Manhattan. I have not yet found immigration records for Hugo and Hans, who did come to the US; Kurt died in 1941 in Palestine.
Hannah and Martha had at least one other sister, who married W. Seligmann, he is listed as the US contact for Joseph and Martha’s immigration.
Clearly there is more work to do!
