Hendrik Jacob Stellingwerf (1777-1850)
Hendrik Jacob Stellingwerf (dutch link) was baptized 28 Dec 1777 in Zwolle, the Netherlands. His first wife is my 2nd cousin 6x removed. He married her in Almelo, and he lived his entire married life there; his second wfe was also born and bred in Almelo. You can find their genealogy in the Almelo database
Hendrik Jacob was a silversmith, as was his father Willem Lubbertus (who worked in Zwolle), his brother Jacob Hendrik (who worked in Amsterdam), his mother’s brother ? Pierolet (also in Amsterdam). His brother’s son also became a silversmith.(1) If Hendrik Jacob had had sons, they would no doubt also have followed in his footsteps. However, Hendrik Jacob apparently retired as a practising silversmith, in 1833 in the death certificate of his second wife, he is listed as “kashouder” which literally means cashier, but the actual meaning is not quite clear, and probably depends a bit on the context. He did handle money, possibly for a bank.
But Hendrik Jacob had no sons; his first wife died in childbirth after less than one year of marriage (the daughter survived, married, and had at least two surviving children, in addition to several who died young). His second wife was 40 when they married, they had one child, Jan Hendrik, who died when he was about 16 month old. Another life marked by loss.
