#1. Matthew A. Smith (from 1930 to 1931).
     In 1930 his stepson David E. Coe was enumerated with him. See 3 Ballard Place for David's biography.

     Matthew A. Smith of East Orange was among the early settlers of Radburn.3
The value of the house in 1930 was $10,500.4
Matthew was listed in 1930-1 at 7 Ashburn Place, in 1933 at 334 Howard Ave, then in 1940 as renters at 12 Ballard Place, in 1935 as removed to South Africa, and in 1946 at 10 Arlington Place. His step-son David E. Coe later moves to 6 Beekman Place.
Matthew A. Smith was born in 1893 in New Jersey.4,5 Matthew A. Smith married F. Theodora in 1920.4,5 Matthew A. Smith appeared on the 1930 Census as the head of household at 7 Ashburn Place, with F. Theodora as wife. Enumerated with him was David E. Coe, step-son.4 Matthew A. Smith was from 1930 to 1933 a credit manager at the City Housing Corporation. In the 1940 census he is listed as a foreign shipping executive.4,6,5 He did not own a radio in 1930.4 Matthew A. Smith was a Veteran of the World War.4 F. was born in 1892 in New York.4,5 F. Theodora was interned in a Japanese camp in the Philipines during WWII.7 F. Theodora Smith was in 1930 hostess for a land company.4 In 1940 the Record had an article about Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their travels. It also stated they had been living in Radburn for the last year.8


#2. Elmer L. Mackey (from 1933 to 1940).
     In 1940 his nephew Douglas Knapp is enumerated with him.
Elmer was listed in 1930-1 at 315 Plaza Road North, in 1933-40 at 7 Ashburn Place, and in 1941-46 at 372 Owen Avenue. The value of the house in 1940 was $8,000.9

     The City Housing Corporation sold a house at 7 Ashburn Place to Elmer L. Mackey of Radburn.10

Elmer L. Mackey was born in 1890 in New York.11,9 Elmer L. Mackey married Lorena B. in 1910. She was the widow of Elmer L. in 1960.11,9,12 Elmer L. Mackey was an accountant, and later an assistant Comptroller in New York. In 1930 he was listed as a department head in a bank, and in 1931 as a clerk.11,6,13,14,9 He owned a radio in 1930.11 Lorena was born in 1894 in New York.11,9 Elmer and Lorena had a daughter Ruth.11
Ruth Mackey was born in 1914 in New York.11 She married George H. Smith on 18 March 1933 and they moved to 201-C31 Abbott Road.

     Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lansing Mackey have announced the marriage of their daughter to George Hudson Smith of Cincinnati at Radburn, NJ, on Saturday, March 18th. The ceremony, attended by a few close friends of the families, was performed by the Rev. Deane Edwards in the manse of the church at Radburn.
     Following a reception for the immediate families at the bride's home, the couple enjoyed a wedding trip in New York. Temporarily, they are residing with Mr. and Mrs. Mackey in Radburn, while the groom, a graduate of Yale University in the class of 1932, completes a student's course in New York City.15


Douglas Knapp was born in 1928 in Rhode Island.9 Douglas lived in 1935 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.9


#3. Ronald S. Spittel (from 1941 to 1946).
     In 1941 his mother Mary Spittel lives with him.
Ronald was listed from 1933 to 1940 at 4 Arlington Place, in 1941-6 at 7 Ashburn Place, and in 1958 at 302-F2 Highstreet.
Ronald S. Spittel was born in 1894 in New Jersey.16 Ronald S. Spittel married Nettie.13,16,17 Ronald S. Spittel was an engineer in New York. In 1939 he is a reporter in Hackensack, and in 1941 he is also clerk and manager for the Borough of Fair Lawn. In the 1940 census he is listed as a newspaper writer.13,14,17,16 Nettie was born in 1902 in Canada.16 Ronald had two children: John C. and Richard T. Richard T. Spittel was in 1956 in the US Air Force.18 John was born in 1926 in New Jersey.16 After he married he moved first to 330A Plaza Road North and then to 2 Aberdeen Place.
Mary Spittel was born in 1870 in New Jersey.16

     Private John Spittel. son of Mr and Mrs Ronald S. Spittel of Ashburn Place, was transferred from Camp Kearn in Utah to Harington, TX, where he will take a six week course in Flexible gunnery school.19
