     John Netherton was born c 1747 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.1 He (1) married Elizabeth.1 He (2) married Rebecca Frazier on 5 May 1808 at Jefferson County, Kentucky.1,4 He died on 31 Oct 1834 in Oldham County, Kentucky,1,5, and was buried in the Netherton - Pinnell Cemetery at Oldham County.6

Other information:
     John Netherton and Henry Netherton Sr., Henry Netherton Jr. and George Harding were prob. among the heads of household listed in a 1785 tax-list. John Netherton was the compiler of the list. A 1783 tax lists has Henry taxed for 2 slaves over 16, and 1 under 16, 5 horses, and 12 cattle; and John for 2 slaves over 16 and 2 under, 5 horses and 9 cattle.7,8
     Another John Netherton is listed in Henry County, KY in 1810 (1 male 10-15, 1 male >45, 1 female <10, 1 female >45, no others, no slaves). A John does make a will in Henry County in 1845, but neither John Netherton nor his wife are over 45 in 1810. John Netherton would qualify, but lives afterwards in Jefferson County.9

     There are Virginia revolutionary war records for John, Henry, and Henry Jr. (Virginia Index at Ancestry), but Heritage Quest only has pension Records for John. Ancestry also has court records in Augusta County, Virginia around 1750 in which a Henry Netherton plays a role. Virginia Northern Neck land records as early as 1716, and a Maryland Will as early as 1703.
John is listed in "Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War," by J.T. McAllister (Hot Springs, VA : McAllister Pub., 1913) on page 284 (Part 4: Pensioners living in Virginia in 1835, who received pensions as Virginia Militia men)THE FILSON CLUB HISTORY QUARTERLY, Vol 6 #1 (Jan 1932); p 14 ; Morris Library, University of Delaware, Newark DE. This is a Calendar of Early Jefferson County Wills-Will Books No. 1, 1784 to 1813, which unfortunately is not online. (Most of the quarterly is.)
He fought in the American Revolution. He served in the Virginia Militia of Shenandoah County, first as Captain, later as Major.
He enlisted in 1776 or 1777 in the Shenandoah County, Virginia Militia. He made Captain on 30 Apr 1778, and Major (under Col. Thomas Allen) on 22 Jun 1780. He was Lt. Col. on 31 May 1781, and Colonel on 29 Feb 1782, but is not credited with this service. He participated in the Battle of Yorktown as a Lieutenant-Colonel in 17811,11
He received a pension of $135.00 annually. He started receiving his pension on 30 May 1833. In 1835 he had received
$405.00, and he was 87 yrs old 12.

1830 Fed. census (1 Jun): Household of John Netherland, Shelby County, Indiana. Address is : "North of the Road from Louisville to Frankfort." Household consists of 1 male 15-20, 1 male 80-90 (prob. John), and 1 female 50-60 (prob. his wife Rebecca). No slaves.14

Name variants: John Netherington (in the list of baptisms.)15 John Netherland (on the DAR application (Netherland added in parenthesis) and the 1830 census.)1,14
