Other information:

John Boldrey was a shoemaker.3 He lived in 1818, at the time of his first pension application, in Richmond, Ontario County, New York. In 1820 he lived in Dearborn County, Indiana.3
No Boldrey born in Vermont in 1850 and up census. The fact that John lived in Vermont, may have contributed to the notion that Samuel was born there.
He served in the American Revolution. He enlisted in April 1775, and served 8 months as a private in Captain Silas Cobb's company of Colonel Walker's Regiment of the Massachusetts Line.
He enlisted again a short while later, and served one year in Captain Oliver Soper's Company in Colonel Reed's Regiment. Again he enlisted on Feb 20, 1777, and served as a marine on the frigate "Boston," which captured on June 7, 1777 an enemy ship of Newfoundland. In 1779 he enlisted aboard the "Caesar", and was captured by the enemy on the passage to Port au Prince, and was held prisoner in Port Royal in Jamaica, until "peace took place".3

Boston, a 514-ton 24-gun frigate, was built at Newburyport, Massachusetts, as part of the effort by the American colonies to create a seagoing navy. Completed in 1777, in May of that year she began a North Atlantic cruise in company with the frigate Hancock. In addition to making prizes of two merchant vessels, they captured the British 28-gun frigate Fox on 7 June. A month later, Boston was able to escape when Hancock and Fox were taken by a stronger enemy squadron. In February and March 1778 she transported American envoy John Adams to France, then remained in European waters raiding British commerce. She returned to the Colonies in October. The following year Boston operated in the North Atlantic, taking several prizes during cruises in July-September and November-December. In 1780 she took part in the defense of Charleston, South Carolina, and was captured there by the British 12 May. Renamed Charleston, she served in the Royal Navy until March 1783, when she was sold for breaking up.4
