     Jan Hendrik Gast was born on 16 Nov 1877 in Borne.1 He married Maria Willemina Petronella ter Horst on 11 Nov 1909 at Hellendoorn2,3 (banns 30 Oct 1909, Hellendoorn, also in Borne and Stad Almelo.)2 He died on 21 May 1924 in Everett, Snohomish County, Washington.4 Jan Hendrik, Bertus, Gerhard, Marinus Egbert and Gerritdina were buried in the Maple Leaf Cemetery at Oak Harbor.5 An news article in the Seattle Daily Times on 22 May 1924 mentions his death.6

Jan Hendrik Gast was a milkman in the Netherlands, but he wanted to become a farmer.3 Jan immigrated on 20 May 1911 on the 'Teutonic' to Quebec, Canada, with his wife Maria Willemina and his son Albertus.3,7
     Their destination was Medicine Hat, Alberta.3
     He applied for a homestead patent in 1911 (He was living in Carlstadt, Alb. at that time), and obtained it in 1916. He settled in section 33, southwest quadrant (SW 33 Tsp17 Rge8 Meridian W4)8 In 1923 they immigrated to the US. They lived in Oak Harbor, Island County, Washington.9
     Jan Hendrik Gast and the children died in a housefire.10,9

     He and his wife Mary are listed in the 1921 census for Medicine Hat (AB) with Albertus, Gerrit, Marinus, and Dina. See . He has his own farm. Acc. to this census he immigrated in 1910, and naturalized in 1913. But it also has Albertus as immigrating in 1912.
1916 Alberta census: Household of John H. Gast, 17 8 W4, King 153 (ED 21), Medicine Hat 40. Household consists of John H., his wife Maria and their children Albert, Gerrit and Mariens.11
