Albertus Jan Cornelis ten Bruggencate was born on 28 Dec 1914 in Zuid Scharwoude.1,2 He died on 18 Sep 2005 in Alkmaar.1 There was a death notice in the Alkmaarsche Courant on 21 Sep 2005, in which his wife, children and grandchildren were mentioned.3

Albertus Jan Cornelis ten Bruggencate was a sailor, engineer. He was 4th engineer at the Bintang (Dutch Merchant Navy), that was torpedoed on 21 Nov 1942 and sank. Albertus was rescued by the Monte Altube after 7 days on a raft.5,6,7
He made at least three trips:
(1) on the Salawati (arr. 2 Jul 1937, Tacoma, WA, from Victoria, BC. He was 5th engineer, 22 yr old, was engaged in Tg Priok on 7 May 1937, 5'11", and 165 lbs)
(2) on the Benkgalis (1 Nov 1944, New York. While he is called Albertus in the crew list, and Albertus Jan Cornelis in the list of discharged seamen, it has to be the same person, as it is on the same ship, and the date of engagement was both 7 Jun 1943 in New York. He is 3rd engineer, 28 yrs old, 6'4", 168 lbs)
(3) on the Jan Steen (26 Mar 1945, New York, from Manchester. He signed up in New York).6,7,8

Dutch Visitor
Albert Bruggencate, 4th class engineer in the Dutch Merchant Marine service was a visitor over the week-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gardner Scott on Lowell Street. He has been around the world several times and the last trip was torpedoed and after being adrift for seven days in a life raft, he was picked up and landed in Brazil. He is now on a 46-day furlough. After the war he intends to return to Holland where he was born.9
