Jacob TenBruggen Cate was born on 10 May 1905 in Venlo.1,2,3 He (1) married Bertha Wassenaar, daughter of Jacob Wassenaar and Sjoukje Lingsma, in 1931.4,5,6,7 He (2) married Joanne.8 He died on 18 Jun 1970 in Jersey City, New Jersey,8,9, and was buried on 20 Jun 1970.8

He emigrated on 11 Feb 1929 from Amsterdam to North America10 There are a crew list and a passenger lists. The first is of the Volendam, arriving in New York on 11 Aug 1928 from Rotterdam. Jacobus is 23, a steward, employed for 1 mo., 5'9", 66 kg. The second is of the Manhattan, arriving New York on 29 Sep 1932 from Southampton, Jacobus is 27, b. on Vento (sic!), goes to Prospect Park, NY (sic!).11,6
Jacob TenBruggen Cate was a painter. In the 1940 census he has his own business.4,3 He worked on 12 May 1936 by A. Uhlemann in Ridgewood, New Jersey. August F. W. Uhlemann was a painter. In Holland Jacob also worked for a painter.2,12,10 He and Bertha Wassenaar lived in 1932 at 44 Struck Ave in Prospect Park.6 He and Bertha Wassenaar lived bt 1935 - 1940 at 15 Royal Avenue in Hawthorne. He and his wife live here also in 1935 and 1940, according to the census.2,3 He and Bertha Wassenaar lived bt 1950 - 1960 at 141 North 10th Street in Paterson. In 1960 Bertha was widow of Jacob (last name misspelled as TenBruzzencate).4 An obituary appeared in the Jersey Journal on 19 Jun 1970.

Jacob Ten Bruggen Cate, of 24 Rock Street, Jersey City, died on June 18, 1970. Beloved husband of Joanne. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral from the Laurence G. Quinn Funeral Home, 298 Academy Street at Bergen Square on Saturday at 1 pm. Visitation after 3 pm on Friday.8
