Cornelis ten Bruggencate was very anti-French. On 19 Nov 1813 he is accused of beating up a French border guard, who was found more dead than alive in a well at the Doelen. He also had told the French sympathising mayor "If you are a mare, I am a stallion," and he had wanted to beat him. Now he was declared an outlaw, but had fled to the Langenhorst monastery, behind Gronau. Later he found a hiding place on the farm "Erve Broekhuis" in the Achterhoek. Despite warnings that the French were watching him, he went one evening home to his house in Orange Street. In the Hanterman street he fell into a trap, and was beaten and heavily wounded by some frenchmen. The general opinion was that the french charges were not true. Also on 19 Nov 1813 Gerhard Hulshof, merchant in Vriezenveen, was sentenced to 100 gld fine, because he had incited some kossacks against Cornelis ten Bruggencate and Ds. Stulen in Almelo.7
