Jan ten Bruggencate was born a 1685 in Almelo.1,2 He married (NH) Gesina Houtmans on 19 Jan 1716 in Enter4 (banns (NH) 15 Dec 1715, Almelo, also in Delden).2,5 He died on 20 Mar 1738 in Asia. He probably died in Bengalen.6

After his marriage Jan ten Bruggencate moves into the farm of Gesijna's family. In 1721 Jan's brother Lambert buys the windows of the monastery in Albergen, and he gives them to Jan, who uses them for a new farm. This farm is still standing in Zeldam.7,8
Jan ten Bruggencate went into service with the VOC on 18 Dec 1732. He is a carpenter. His wife Geesje Houtman is listed in his contract. He embarks from Texel on the ship 'Vis' under Master Lukas Semeyns.
The "Vis" departed from Texel, and belonged to the VOC chamber of Enkhuizen. It was 600 ton, build in Enkhuizen, type fluit. Total on board was 150. On account of a bad state the ship was sold at Lisbon on 01-02-1733. The EENDRACHT (now called NIEUWE VIS) (2925) took over the cargo on 08-09-1733. 37 Seafarers, 9 soldiers and 5 craftsmen deserted at Lisbon.9,6
