Johannes Molenstra was born in 1872 in Niehove, gem. Oldehove, Groningen, The Netherlands.1 He married Janna de Boer on 18 May 1895 in Kloosterburen, Groningen, The Netherlands.1

Johannes Molenstra and Janna Molenstra immigrated on the Nieuw Amsterdam, from Rotterdam, arriving in New York on 28 Mar 1910 with two children: Jan (14 b. in Ulrum) and Karel (6 mo, b Kloosterburen). He was going to his step-brother Jacob van Dijk in 99 Hopper Street, Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey. This is most likely the brother of his sister-in-law Anje.2

1920 Fed. census: Household of Johannes Molenstra, (9th Ward), Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Household consists of Johannes, his wife Janna and two children: John (23) and Carl (10). They were truckfarmers.3
