The original houses have been torn down, but the lots were just above the church in Noorderkolonie (map Northern Netherlands, pg. 71 or 57, coordinates 259, 562.)
Ulpen de Haan and Geertje Starke wrote a letter (from Nieuwe Pekela, dated 20 Oct 1918) to their son-in-law Ulpen. They congratulate him and his wife Afina de Haan with his birthday. Ulpen tells about his work, Geertje about the Spanish Flu, which has claimed a number of friends. Hendrik, a nephew, is gravely ill in the hospital in Groningen. She hopes the war will end soon. Sister Grietje also adds her congratulations.8
Ulpen de Haan and Geertje Starke wrote a letter to their daughter Afina. They congratulate her and her husband Ulpen de Haan with her 27th birthday. Brother Hendrik is staying with them with his wife, who made an apron for sister Grietje. Brother Jan Tonke has a new hat, and Hendrik makes fun of father's complaints about peeling potatoes.8
