Jan Tonkes Starke was born on 18 Jan 1838 in Nieuwe Pekela (#370.)3,4 He married Aafien Meijering on on 9 Oct 1861 at her father's house at Wijk D #430, Nieuwe Pekela,2 (banns 6 Oct 1861, Nieuwe Pekela.)4 He died on 8 Oct 1922 in Avereest5, and was buried on 12 Oct 1922 in the Achterveld Cemetery at Dedemsvaart.6

Jan Tonkes Starke was a sailor. Before his marriage he was 2nd mate at the 'Janna Lukkiena'. The captain was A. Bontekoe, and the ship was on route from Rouan to Holland. He had to leave again for Spain a week after his marriage4,2He was a farmer at Geertje's and Grietje's marriage. After their son Roelf drowned, Aafien did not want him to sail anymore.7,8

The ship 'Jeltina' (134 ton, build in 1858, owner U. Zuiderveen from Pekela, captain J. T. Starke) sank on 1 Jan 1789 near the Doggersbank, en route from Hamburg to Cette (France) with a load of salt. All 6 hands were saved.9,10
The dutch ship 'Elsje', with captain J. T. Starke from Nieuwe Pekela, and owned by J. J. Koerts and Sons from Oude Pekela, en route from St. Petersburg to Helsingor, and loaded with rye, has been stranded on the Rodshor Cliffs in Finland. All hands (consisting of Jan Tonkes Starke (captain, 40 yr, Nieuwe Pekela), Wolter de Grooth (30 yr, mate, Nieuwe Pekela), Reinko Lagtenberg (seaman, 16 yr, Groningen), and Wilhelmus van der Laan (cook, 23 yr, Nieuwe Pekela) were saved (reported on 20 Sep 1879.)11,12
He and Aafien Meijering moved on 18 Dec 1899 to Borger.13 De Winschoter Courant noted:
The farm of J. T. Starke in Nieuwe Pekela has been sold to A. J. Zuiderweg, farmer te Zuidwending (Veendam.)14
