The Dutch House1


The "Dutch House" has been a restaurant or tavern since 1929. The sandstone construction is typical of the early Flemish Colonial style. No early ownership has been established but it is believe to be the Bogert House built between 1740 and 1760. The land stretched to the Glen Rock area and was farmed until the Radburn developers bought it in the late 1920's.2. However, according to the 2008-9 Borough Calendar it was build between 1750 and 1800, and was sold in 1808 by John P. Vanderbeck to Richard J. Berdan 3. The Dutch House was owned and operated from 1933-37 by Mrs Jane K. Coudert and her husband. In 1937 Thomas F. LaHiff took over the business. On 19 April 1961 4Frank Drahouzel bought the Dutch House, and his family still operates it.5,6,7 See also their website.

(358) Fair Lawn Ave was the designation in the census, as no house numbers were used.11 The monthly rent in 1940 was $75.11
Thomas was listed in 1930-1 at 311 Plaza Road North, in 1933 at 332A Plaza Road North, then in 1935-7 at 324B Plaza Road North, in 1939-41 at The Dutch House, and from 1948-1960 at 15 Aberdeen Place.
Thomas F. LaHiff was born in 1903 in New York.12,11 Thomas F. LaHiff married Sally E. in 1926.12,11 Thomas F. LaHiff was in 1930 a cashier for a brokerage firm, in 1931 a clerk, and in 1937 a manager Dutch House. In 1933-35 no occupation was listed. From 1939 he was listed as the owner of Dutch House.12,13,10,14,5,11 Sally was born in 1904 in England.12,11 Thomas and Sally lived in 1935 in Fair Lawn.15 Paul was born in January 1927 in New York.12 Sally was born in November 1929 in New York.12,11
