In the fall of 1862, three cavalry companies were formed in the county, for the Second Nebraska Regiment, Company C, Company E, and Company M. The officers of Company E were: Captain, R. W. Furnas; First Lieutenant, Lewis Hill; Second Lieutenant, J. H. Mann; Dr. C. F. Stewart was Post Surgeon of this latter company, which was stationed for a few months at Nemaha City.7
