Roelof Meijering was born on 15 Oct 1862 in Nieuwe Pekela.1 He married Grietje Stenger on 6 Jan 1883 at Delfzijl.2 He died a 4 Mar 1883.3
Roelof left Delfzijl with the 'Maria' on 4 Mar 1883, and nothing had been heard from the ship since. On 20 Jun 1883 the Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad reported that a piece of a seamanschest was found with the words "R.J. Starke N. Pekela." It has been found that Starke was mustered as 2nd mate on the 'Maria' and so it may be assumed that the ship has perished and all hands have been lost (including the young wife of the captain (Roelf Starke is not listed in the official musterrolls of this journey.)3,4
