     Jan Starke was born on 31 Mar 1839 in Nieuwe Pekela (house #161.)3 He married Geertje Oppentogt on 24 Dec 1873 at Nieuwe Pekela.1,2 He died on 26 Feb 1874 on board of the ship "Maria Jantina," when, sailing near the English coast, it was sunk near Gloucester.2

Mumbles, Mar 1st. A ship, about 15 ft long, painted black and green on the outside, and green on the inside, and H.J. de Boer in white letters in the back, and also a sailor's chest, painted green with the name J.J. Starke, Nieuwe Pekela, were found at sea yesterday by oyster fishermen, and brought here. The ship Maria Jantina, captain H.J. de Boer, from Groningen to Gloucester had departed Portland on Feb 24th.

Kladder, on the ship Hendrika Hillechiena, from here to Swansea, that he saw the ship and crew perish, but that he was unable to do something bacause of the terrible weather

Harlingen, May 28th. According to messages received here, is the Dutch ship Jantina Maria, capt. de Boer, from Groningen to Gloucester perished with all hands.4
