     Thomas Root was born in 1648 in Farmington, Connecticut.¹ He (1) married Mary Gridley in 1670.^2,3 He (2) married Mary Spencer on 7 Oct 1675 at Westfield, Massachusetts.⁴ He (3) married Sarah Leonard on 25 Jan 1692/93 at Springfield, Massachusetts.^5,4 He died on 16 Aug 1709 in Westfield, Massachusetts.^6,1

Thomas Root and Mary Gridley had two children: Thomas (b. 1 Sep 1671, d. 25 Feb 1689) and Mary (b. 21 Oct 1673, m. 12 Dec 1700 Isaac Meecham).²
Thomas Root and Mary Spencer had six or seven children, all born in Westfield. There is a difference between the various sources about the number of children; NEHGR has Mary (b. 22 Oct 1676), Thomas (b. 1 Sep 1677, d. 28 Feb 1688/89), Samuel (b. 16 Feb 1678/79), Elizabeth (b. 16 Feb 1679/80), Sarah (b. 27 Jul 1683), Timothy (b. 3 Dec 1685), and Joseph (b. 16 Jun 1688); Roote History has John (b. 25 Dec 1676, d. 1 Oct 1744), and then as above Samuel (b. 16 Feb 1678/79), Elizabeth (b. 16 Feb 1679/80), Sarah (b. 27 Jul 1683), Timothy (b. 3 Dec 1685), and Joseph (b. 16 Jun 1688).^7,8
Thomas Root and Sarah Dumbleton had two children, twins, Thankful and Mary (or Mercy), b. 12 Nov 1693 in Westfield.^6,2
     He took the oath of fidelity on 26 Mar 1661 in Northampton, and the oath of allegiance in Westfield on 22 Dec 1669. He was sworn in as constable of Westfield on 6 Mar 1671/72.^9,1
The first assignment of houselots in Westfield took place on 16 Mar 1667. David Ashley, John Root, Thomas Root, George Phelps, Thomas Dewey and Thomas Noble were among those who received a piece of land.^{1011,2,12,13,6}
