Lucas was born 17 Mar 1857, second son and fourth child of Gerrit Hendrik Broekman<\/a>\u00a0(dutch link<\/a>) and Catharina Elizabeth Ament. He followed in his father’s footsteps and became an iron manufacturer, but died at age 31.\u00a0 He is my husband’s second cousin 3x removed.<\/p>\n

I wrote about his father’s firm before<\/a>, but wanted to explore the available resources in the Amsterdam Archives some more. Information about the firm G.H. Broekman Lzn and his son G.H. Broekman, Jr. (Lucas’ brother) can be found in several archives within the Amsterdam Archives.<\/p>\n

However, when I went back to look at those again, several seemed to be no longer available anymore, or at least I couldn’t find them. This is a great lesson, that it is not enough to save the citation, you should save the images as well, and preferably work things into a story that makes sense(1),(2)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Lucas died in 1888 in De Bilt, and is buried in the Village Church Cemetery there. It is not clear, why he was in De Bilt when he died. Was he ill, and passing time “in the country” for his health? His death is also registered in Amsterdam, so his legal residence was still there. He is buried in the village cemetery, his gravestone picture is available here<\/a>. Another short life with many unknowns.<\/p>\n
