I have posted some before, and for lack of time (there is yard work to do, and walks to take) I will post some more.<\/p>\n<h4>The Dry Ditch<\/h4>\n<p>It was a free environment near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Drachten,+Netherlands\/@53.1054856,6.0202692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drachten<\/a>.<sup>(1)<\/sup>\u00a0 Unpaved paths, quiet streets, bicycle paths along cart tracks, only in the \u201cBuurt\u201d I was not allowed to go with my bicycle, because there it was busy with the trolley cars, horses and buggies, some cars and of course more bicycles.\u00a0 There was also the bridge over the canal that divided Drachten in North and South side.\u00a0 First that bridge was an old-fashioned narrow drawbridge, but later it became a wider modern swing bridge.\u00a0 The bridge was often open, because a lot of ships came through the canal.\u00a0 Traffic of course had to wait.\u00a0 So my mother thought it would be safer if I didn\u2019t go there with my bicycle.\u00a0 I also was not allowed to go to school by bicycle, but it was not far to walk.\u00a0 I also liked running, and frequently we went to school in a group.\u00a0 Along the path there were frequently ditches, dry in the summer.\u00a0 One ditch I remember, we used to go through it on the bike, on one side diagonally along the side, and then if you had enough speed, we could just make it to the top of the opposite side.\u00a0 But if you didn\u2019t make it, you fell with bike and all over into the dry ditch.<\/p>\n<p>When I reread what I wrote, they do not seem to be very interesting stories.\u00a0 Maybe it will improve.\u00a0 Before I started to write, I read a few books with memories to get into the mood.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhen I was a boy\u201d by Erich K\u00e4stner (beginning 20th century)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMemories of my Youth\u201d by Albert Schweitzer (end 19th century)<\/li>\n<li>Pieces from Godfried Bomans (3rd decade of 20th century)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe boy of the farmer in the woods\u201d by Peter Rosegger (19th century)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(1) She lived in Drachten, Friesland, from 1924 to 1934.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spurred on by my sister, my mother wrote some memoirs.
