Egbert Stevense Van Seyl

Egbert Stevense Van Seyl, son of Steven [Van Seyl], married Annaken Dutuo (Anna Dutouit; DuToit), dau. of Abraham DuToit & Jeanne Bocquet (Bokee).

Anna Du Toit was accepted into membership at the Dutch Reformed Church of Bergen, NJ 30 Sep 1689.

Johannes Van Zile

Johannes Van Zile, probable son of Egbert Van Zeyl & Annatje Dutouit, married Elena Van Blarcom (Helena), probable daughter of Johannes Van Blarcom & & Metje Jans Springsteen.
Johannes Van Zile was baptized 23 July 1693 NYC Reformed Dutch Church; died before May 1762.

The Van Zyle tract, a lot of 145 acres (over 1000 feet wide running east and west; 6600 feet long, running north and south) was located running from what is now the Wortendyke section of Midland Park northerly into Wyckoff (Godwin Avenue was later laid out running through its center). It was sold by deed made 18 March 1712/13 by John Barbarie, Andrew Fresneau, and Peter Fauconnier, to Johannis Van Zeyl for £45. The tract was subsequently divided into 3 equal parts, and the north third of the land was inherited by John Van Zeyl, Junior, who sold it, on 5 May 1762 to Hendrick Messeker (Masker).

The following information probably pertains to this Johannes Van Zile. From The Minutes of the Board of Proprietors of the Eastern Division of New Jersey from 1725 to 1744, Perth Amboy (Re: Ramapo Tract; paraphrased unless in quotes)
----- Vol. II, p. 171)...23 June 1742...9 April last William Ramsay came and told Mr. Alexander that one Hannes Vansyle has this winter by pretence of a lease from Fauconier, cut a great deal of timber near Van Syle's place and elsewhere, and hurts the land...
----- (Vol. II, p. 296)...[John Forman's journal]...28 May 1743...asked Hannes Vanblercum how the vacant land lay between him and John Hopper. He said it also joined to Hannes Vansile, Peter Deboue, John Van Buskirk, Hannes Traphangle and Urey Westerfelt, and said there was at least 600 acres of vacant land there...

----- (Vol. III, p. 15)...5 April 1745...Board of Prop., Trustees of Romopock, executed following deed: Johannes Vanzeil, 146 acres for consideration of £29:4:0.
----- (Vol. III, p. 194)...27 March 1751...Mr. Ramsey requested a lease of 400 acres upon the north side of Vansiel's tract, including the 200 acres already leased to said Ramsey.
----- (Vol. III, p. 403, chart)...19 August 1763...Board executed lease at Romopock to Johanes Van Zile, lot no. 180, 50 acres at 10 s, 9 August 1763.

Road Return Book A, pg. 53 (Budke Vol. 11): Recorded at the request of Benjamin Oldis Ramapoch July 1st 1762. Wee the surveyors of the County of Bergen being called and have mett at the house of Benjamin Oldis and have all agreed have laid a road of one rodd wide beginning at Ramapough Road and likewise at the corner of the fence where the road turns to the house of Johannis Van Zeil on the East side of the fence as it now stands untill it comes unto the line of Benjamin Oldis its [?] to an northerly course so as to be a rodd distance from the barn and so wee the surveyors have hereunto sett our hands day and date above mentioned.-- Stephen Sobrisko, Lambartus Laroe, Nikolcas Rix, Hendrick Hoppe, and have all agreed was before the ensealing.

Steven Van Zile


Steven Van Zile, probable son of Egbert Stevense Van Zeyl & Annatie Dutouit, married Neeltje Messeker, dau. of Harmen Messeker & Marytje Rycker.

Neeltje Messeker was baptized 1707 Port Richmond, Staten Island, NY.

Note that a "Neeltje Messeker" (not necessarily this Neeltje) had bp. at Acquackanonk Reformed Dutch Church (now Passaic NJ) 16 July 1727 a child, Neeltje born 17 April ("Illigitimate' and "father unknown" in bp. rec.) The witness was the mother. Another "Neeltje Messecor" and her husband "Jacob Scheerman" had a dau. Antje (b. 19 Feb) bp. Acqauckanonk 28 Mar 1731 (the wit: Jacob Thomasse, Maria Gerbrandse).
