Packer / Hanselpacker / Henselbecker

This surname may have earlier been written "Hanselpacker," "Hanselbecker,"
"Henselpecker," or other similar variations. This spelling of
the surname may reflect the immigrant's given name and/or his father's given
name, which may have been Hansel or Hans (Anglicized as John).
The family was probably of German descent.
Some Hanselpackers (with variant spellings of the surname, and not necessarily
from Bergen County) were United Empire Loyalists and apparently relocated
to Nova Scotia after the Revolution on parcels of land granted to them.
Conrad Handlespike had 350 acres in Digby Township in Annapolis County,
Nova Scotia which had been granted in 1784 and escheated in 1800. William
Hanselspiker had 100 acres (a grant) in Digby Township in Annapolis County,
Nova Scotia in 1801. (Gilroy, Marion, Loyalists and Land Settlement in Nova
Scotia, 1937, pp. 15 and 33.)
Conrad Handlespiker, was listed in the 18 July 1784 Muster Roll for Digby,
as a discharged officer or private, with a family of 5. His lot was apparently
located on Queen Street (U). Both Conrad and William Handlespiker were listed
in the 1 Apr 1795 Tax Assessment Roll for the Town of Digby.
And in the Trinity Parish of Digby, a list of residents September 21, 1789
(compiled for defraying incidental expenses, comprising Sexton's salary),
includes: Conrad Handlespiker, now spelled Handspiker. Digby County Funerals:
June 24, 1809, Conrad Handlespiker, Mount Pleasant, of old age. (Wilson,
Isaiah W., Geography and History of the County of Digby, 1900, p, 74, 396,
455)
The pre-Revolutionary-era ancestor of William J. Packer (b. 10 Jan 1795;
m. Margaret (Peggy) Michlor/Mickler) may have built the oldest section of
the Packer House on Ewing Avenue in Franklin Lakes, Bergen County, NJ, which
incorporates sections built probably at three different times. The oldest
section is built of stone laid with clay and straw mortar and has hand-hewn
laths. Its methods of construction denote a building date in the early 1700s.
