The Baptist Church history is complicated - see the Genealogical Society of Rockland County
web site for details. The introduction below is taken directly from George Budke's work,
and he was unaware of the existence of any marriage records.
We have recently learned that there are records of marriages
performed by Elder Griffiths between 1815 and 1853. They are available
in the Bergen Historical Society collection at Bergen Community College in Hackensack, NJ.
It is recorded in the membership records below that Elder Griffiths and
his wife came to the church in 1815.
The marriage records were given to the Nyack First Baptist Church by
Marion Hopper, great-granddaughter of Elder Griffiths. The marriage
and baptism records were transcribed by Beatrice and Ralph Johnson in
1972, but are not published. We are thankful to Deborah Guida for
advising the Rockland RootsWeb list of the existence of the additional
records, which we will add to this page as time permits.
This is what Budke had to say about the church, as he was unaware of
the aforementioned marriage records:
THE NANUET BAPTIST CHURCH
has no marriage or birth records. Their earliest records begin with
the organization of the church in 1798, and are contained in a Book
of Minutes consisting of entries of the election of officers, business
matters pertaining to the congregation, baptisms of new members,
receptions of new members with letters from other Baptist churches,
dismissals of members by letter to other churches, disciplinary decisions
and a few death records.
From this volume, I [i.e., George Budke] have compiled the following
MEMBERSHIP ROLL from 1798 to the end of 1850. I [Budke] have also copied
the deaths recorded therein.
The minutes start with:
A Solemn Covenant
for the Baptist Church of Christ at Rockland, entered into the 17th day
of October, in the year of our Lord and Saviour, Christ, one thousand
seven hundred and ninety eight.
We whose names are hereunto subscribed having been baptised upon our
Profession of Faith in Christ and believing it to be our duty to walk
in all the ordinances of the Gospel which we cannot be in a situation
to do without being united together in the order of a Gospel Church, that
we may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ - Romans, 15th Chapter, verse 6.
Therefore, that all persons whom it may concern may know how we understand
and believe at the time of our uniting together, We do in sincerity declare
the following Articles to be a summary of our Faith and what we do engage
in the strength of the Lord to maintain, observe and practice.
(Here follow 23 articles of belief.)
In testimony of our full agreement and unanimous consent to the aforesaid
doctrines and covenants, each of us do voluntarily subscribe our names:
