Hendrikus Krabshuis was born in Almelo.2 He was baptized (NH) on 12 Aug 1779 in Almelo.1 He married Aaltjen Krommedijk, daughter of Jannes Krommendijk and Liesbeth Knoeff, on 18 Feb 1812 in Almelo2 (banns 2 Feb 1812, Almelo.)2 He died on 2 Dec 1828 in Frederiksoord (Vledder).3

Hendrikus Krabshuis and Aaltjen Krommedijk were among the first people to be sent to Frederiksoord in the province of Drenthe. This was a place, started in 1818 by the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid (Benevolent Society) to give poor people a place to be farmers, and so get a new start in life. This all sounded very idyllic, but was not quite so in reality. Although many colonists indeed made a new life and became free farmers, many others did not, and ended up instead in the penal colonies that were also part of the Society. And of course, it did not put a dent in the number of homeless and poor in the big cities. More information is mainly in Dutch.
